Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has cautioned that any decisions made without Ukraine’s participation will be “ineffective” as US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin prepare to meet in Alaska next week.
Firm Stance on Territorial Integrity
In a statement on social media Saturday, Zelensky declared, “The citizens of Ukraine will not accept any encroachment on their land. Decisions made without our participation will not contribute to peace.” He stressed that peace efforts must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Ongoing War and Failed Negotiations
The Russia-Ukraine conflict, ongoing since February 2022, has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions. Despite three rounds of talks between Russia and Ukraine this year, no concrete agreement has been reached.
Lack of Direct Putin-Zelensky Talks
President Putin has so far refused direct talks with Zelensky, who insists such dialogue is essential for peace.
Trump-Putin Summit Set for July 30
President Trump announced the Alaska summit on Friday, hinting at possible land swaps but giving no details. The meeting is viewed as a significant step in US-Russia dialogue.
